What Verella checks for type 2 diabetes
Turn on type 2 diabetes in your profile and two extra rules run on every label. One is a caution and one is a credit, which is the point: a condition profile is not a list of things to avoid.
The 2 rules
-
Sugars are 22.5 g or more per 100 g
High in sugars. Some guidance suggests limiting free sugars can help blood-glucose control. Consider lower-sugar options where you can.

-
Fibre is 6 g or more per 100 g and sugars are under 22.5 g
Good source of fibre. Diabetes nutrition guidance emphasises higher-fibre, minimally processed carbohydrate. A helpful choice for many people managing blood glucose.
Source: American Diabetes Association, Standards of Care in Diabetes 2026, Recommendation 5.24, which emphasises high-fibre carbohydrate at 14 g or more per 1000 kcal; Diabetes UK, Eating well with type 2 diabetes
What this looks like on a real product
Plain rolled oats, 10 g of fibre and 2.5 g of sugars per 100 g.
Scanned with no conditions set
Fine in moderationMinimally processed and high in fibre, held back a little by calorie density.
The same oats, scanned with type 2 diabetes turned on
Good choiceThe fibre clears the ADA threshold and the sugars are nowhere near the high line, so the credit applies and the oats move up a tier.
Both verdicts above are real output from the shipped Verella engine, run on live Open Food Facts data on 5 October 2026, with only the condition changed between the two profiles. Open Food Facts data changes over time, so a scan today can differ.
Worth knowing
- The fibre credit only applies when the product's sugars are below the high line. A sugary cereal with added fibre does not get rewarded for the fibre.
- Verella looks at the label, not at you. It has no idea what your glucose did after you ate something, and it is not a substitute for the monitoring and advice your care team provides.
These rules encode broadly published patient guidance and are hedged on purpose. Verella cannot know your disease activity, your medication or what your care team has already advised, so every note defers to them.
Verella provides general nutrition information. It is not medical or dietary advice and it is not a substitute for a doctor or a registered dietitian.
